What actually determines longevity

Concentration. The single biggest factor. Eau de Toilette at 5–15% oil gives three to four hours. Eau de Parfum at 15–20% gives six to eight. Parfum at 20–30% gives eight or more. Skin type. Oily skin holds fragrance considerably longer than dry skin, because fragrance molecules bind to oil. This is why the same scent lasts six hours on one person and two on another, and it is not the perfume’s fault.

Which families hold

Oriental and amber last longest by a wide margin. Vanilla, resins, spices and oud — the family that dominates the local market, and genuinely the right choice if longevity is your priority.

Woody compositions hold well. Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli are all heavy molecules.

Leather and tobacco last long and are strongly seasonal.

Fresh, citrus and aquatic are the shortest-lived. Three to four hours at best, less in heat. Buy these knowing you will reapply.

Application, where most longevity is lost

Moisturise first. Unscented lotion on the pulse points before spraying routinely adds two to three hours, because fragrance binds to oil and dry skin lets it evaporate. This is the single most effective free change available and almost nobody does it.
