Best Sunblock for Summer

Summer does not just mean more sun. It changes how sunblock behaves on skin, and a formula that performed perfectly in winter can fail in June without anything being wrong with it. Understanding what changes makes the adjustment obvious.

The four things heat changes

Sweat removes product. This is the dominant mechanism of protection loss in summer, more than UV degrading the filters. A water-resistance claim is the single most useful label at this time of year.

Sebum production rises. Even dry skin gets shinier. Combination skin behaves like oily skin.

Emulsions loosen. Above the high thirties, creams thin out. A formula that felt balanced in March feels greasy in June with no change to the product.

Exposure time increases. More waiting outdoors, more travel, more unplanned sun.

What a summer formula needs

Water or sweat resistance. Forty or eighty minutes. Look for it explicitly.

A fast set. Touch-dry in under a minute. Slow-drying formulas never properly set in humidity and pick up dust.

SPF 50 with PA++++. Not the place to economise.

A matte or satin finish. Dewy finishes read as sweat by midday.

A large size. Summer consumption runs close to double winter consumption once reapplication is counted.

A gel based sunscreen in Pakistan will meet most of these by default, which is why the format dominates this season.

Reapplication, which is the whole game

The morning layer will not last the day in heat. Plan for it rather than hoping.

Blot sweat with a tissue first. Applying over wet skin dilutes the layer rather than rebuilding it.

Use a stick or compact for the face, since neither needs clean hands. Use a spray for arms, neck and scalp. Reapply before going out rather than after, so the layer has time to set.

Every two to three hours in genuine heat. Every three to four in moderate conditions.

What people forget in summer

Ears, the back of the neck, the scalp parting, and the tops of the feet in sandals. All of them burn readily and none of them get covered by a face-only routine.

Car windows are not protection. Glass blocks UVB and passes a good share of UVA.

Clothing does more than most people credit. A tightly woven full-sleeve shirt, a cap and sunglasses reduce the total load substantially.

Coming out of summer

From October, most skin can move to a slightly richer base. Skin that has run hot for months is often more dehydrated than it looks, and the tightness that shows up in November is usually the summer catching up.

Planning ahead

Buy for summer before summer arrives. Stock moves faster and prices firm once the heat sets in, and the worst time to be trialling an unfamiliar formula is during a heatwave. Testing a new sunblock in March gives you two months to find out whether it suits you, and means you start the difficult season with something you already trust rather than something you hope will work.

Keep your winter formula rather than using it up, too. It will be the right choice again by November, and sunscreen stores well for around a year once opened provided it is kept out of direct heat.

Above all, plan for reapplication rather than hoping the morning layer holds. In a Pakistani summer it will not, and accepting that early is what makes the routine work.
