Best Sunscreen for Face

The best facial sunscreen is not a product, it is a fit. A formula that someone else rates highly can be completely wrong for your skin, your climate and the way you get dressed in the morning. What follows is a method for finding yours rather than a list of somebody else’s favourites.

Start with what your skin does by three in the afternoon

Not what it does after washing. Mid-afternoon behaviour is the honest signal.

Shiny all over. You need a matte gel or fluid with sebum absorbers.

Shiny in the middle, comfortable on the cheeks. Combination. A satin finish, applied unevenly.

Tight or flaking. Dry. A cream with glycerin, ceramides and squalane.

Fine, no complaints. Normal. Pick on finish preference alone.

Red, stinging or itchy. Sensitive. Fragrance-free and mineral.

This one observation eliminates most of the shelf.

Then check three things on the label

SPF 50. The sensible default in this region, and the premium over SPF 30 is small.

PA+++ or PA++++. This is UVA protection, and it is what prevents pigmentation and ageing. SPF does not cover it. A high SPF with no UVA rating is half a product.

Size. Roughly thirty millilitres a month for facial use. Anything you ration is the wrong purchase.

Then check it fits your morning

This is the part people skip and then wonder why a well-reviewed product ended up in a drawer.

If you wear makeup, the sunscreen has to set quickly and not pill. If you leave in a hurry, it has to absorb in under a minute. If you are outdoors, it needs a water-resistance claim. If you will never reapply, a slightly higher-performing morning layer matters more.

A sunscreen that fails your morning will not be worn, and an unworn SPF 50 protects less than a worn SPF 30.

The extras, ranked by usefulness

A tint. Genuinely useful. Blocks visible light, cancels cast, doubles as light coverage. The tinted sunscreen in Pakistan range covers this.

Niacinamide. Worth having, especially on oily or marked skin.

Antioxidants. Modest benefit, no downside.

Claims about pores, instant glow or all-day oil control. Ignore.

Testing it properly

Give any new formula a fortnight before judging, and assess it at four in the afternoon rather than at nine in the morning. Change one product at a time so you know what caused what.

A note on changing products

There is no benefit to rotating sunscreens, and some cost. Skin does not build tolerance to UV filters, and every new formula is another variable if something reacts. Once you find one that fits your skin, your climate and your morning, stay with it and repurchase. Reassess once a year, or when the season turns and your skin behaves differently, rather than whenever something new is recommended to you.

One further point about quantity, since it undermines every other decision on this page. The tested SPF figure assumes a specific amount, and most people apply between a third and a half of it. That turns an SPF 50 into something closer to an SPF 15 in practice. Getting the amount right does more for your protection than any upgrade in formula, filter system or price band, and it costs nothing at all.

If you are unsure where to start, a mid-range SPF 50 with a PA++++ rating in a texture that matches your skin type will be right for most people. Refine from there rather than trying to get it perfect first time.
